4 Favorite Hiking Trails and Paths Near Bow, NH
The small town of Bow, NH is lucky enough to be situated close to both the White Mountains, a spectacular chain of mountains that run across the north of New Hampshire, and the Green Mountains National Forest to the east. This makes for a region full to the brim with spectacular hiking trails and offers some truly breathtaking views.
1. Mount Monadnock
Supposedly one of the world’s most climbed mountains, this majestic summit can offer views as far as Boston on a clear day. There are several routes to the top, but the most popular is the White Cross Trail, which makes for an easy 4-hour loop over fairly easy terrain.
The trailhead is situated in Monadnock State Park. If you’re looking for more of a challenge, then the longer Pumpelly trail, which begins by Dublin Lake on the opposite side of the mountain is a good bet and covers more varied terrain. It takes about six to eight hours for a round trip.
2. Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail – Mount Washington
One of the most rewarding trails in the entire northwest, no trip to the north of the state would be complete without attempting to climb Mount Washington, and the Ammonoosuc trail is one of the best routes to take. Taking in the beautiful Lakes of the Clouds on the way, this trail starts at the foot of the Mount Washington Cog Railway.
You can return to the trailhead by the much easier Jewell Trail, which has beautiful scenery, as well. Remember that the weather can change quickly in the mountains, so dress warmly and bring plenty of extra layers.
3. Pawtuckaway Boulder Trail
Located between Bow and the Massachusetts border in Pawtuckaway state park, this fantastic trail takes in incredible rock formations and boulders dropped from the glaciers of the last ice age.
The main trail is a two-mile loop, but if you want to extend it take the side trail towards the pair of caves known as the Devils Den, located at the base of an imposing stone outcrop.
4. Mount Kearsarge Rollins
Mount Kearsarge can be best climbed from Rollins State Park, which is less than 30 minutes drive to the north of Bow. The trail is only about a mile in length from the trailhead in the park to the fire tower at the mountain’s summit but takes in incredible views into Vermont from the lonely summit.
The tower is manned during the summer and fall, but the rangers are usually happy to welcome visitors. You can take the slightly shorter Barlow Trail from the summit, which makes a great return route, and takes in some fantastic ledges along the way.
New Hampshire is full of fantastic scenery, and the best way to experience it is undoubtedly on foot. So get outside, strap on your hiking boots and explore, and you’ll be sure to find your new favorite walk. Need a new vehicle for your next adventure?
